The Cultural Heritage System of the City of Ugento

The Cultural Heritage System of the City of Ugento (LE) offers a journey of knowledge of the places of the city's culture and includes the New Archaeological Museum, the Monumental Complex of the Crypt of the Crucifix and the Church of the Madonna of Constantinople, the Castle, the former church of Santa Filomena and Palazzo Rovito, home of the community library.

The New Archaeological Museum is located inside the ancient Franciscan Convent of S. Maria della Pietà, in the historic center of Ugento. The structure was built in 1430 at the behest of Raimondello Orsini del Balzo, Count of Ugento and was for a long time a place of retreat and prayer for the Observant Friars Minor. The exhibits on display, discovered over decades of excavations and research, tell the story of the past of Ugento, the largest center in Messapia. The exhibition itinerary is divided into chronological and thematic sections, including those dedicated to the Zeus of Ugento, the Tomb of the Athlete, the Ugentine necropolises, cults and coins.
The Crypt of the Crucifix, a small rock church from the 12th-13th century, whose walls and ceiling are frescoed with an interesting pictorial cycle. Near the hypogeum is the small Church of the Madonna of Constantinople, incorporated into a 17th century farmhouse structure.
The original nucleus of Palazzo Rovito dates back to the 15th century; the building is on two levels, around a small central courtyard; the reception rooms still retain stuccos and frescoed ceilings. Starting from the second half of the nineteenth century it was the home of the noble Rovito family for over a century, during which it was expanded with the addition of new structures which gave it its current layout.

The Castle stands in the highest part of the greenhouse from which you can see and control the entire surrounding area. In 2015 the property underwent an important restoration project which made it possible to recover information on the previous phases. The building has undergone various transformations over the centuries but it was with the D'Amore family that it experienced its period of maximum splendor: acquired in 1643, the family enriched the structure following the Baroque style both in the architectural elements and in the fresco cycles. Today the castle has been partly transformed into a luxury hotel and partly intended for tourist use.

The seventh-century church of Santa Filomena, now deconsecrated, is located in the historic center and was annexed to the sixteenth-century Benedictine Monastery. After the recent restoration its intended use changed from a council chamber to a conference room and for temporary exhibitions.
